Beacon Book Box Unboxing: Five Dark Fates

Hello Bookworms!

I am coming at you with another unboxing that should have been posted awhile ago, heh. Oopsie!

This special edition box comes from Beacon Book Box. I posted another unboxing from there for Stalking jack the Ripper which can be found here. One good thing about this company is that they are great for when it comes to shipping on time. I have had one issue with them which was discussed in the other unboxing. I did eventually get replacements but they sent the first ones to my sister and not the address I had given them. Not sure how that happened. In total it took about 4-5 emails with them from beginning of September to the last part of October. That’s a good bit of time especially when they said they would get to it by a certain date.

I am glad that they finally replaced them. Hopefully for others it won’t take as long. I will most likely purchase from them again because I do enjoy their special edition boxes and find them to be worth the money. I do not care for their monthly boxes and that is just my preference.

Anyways, let’s get into the unboxing!

Included In This Box:

  • “Three Sisters” Blanket (@nisha_letters)
  • Katharine Inspired Throw Pillow Cover (@blanca.designs)
  • “Three Queens” Tapestry (@rachel.hanke27)
  • Fennbirn Crest Enamel Pin (@sjwonderlandz)
  • Familiar Booksleeve (@sjwonderlandz)
  • Three Queens Candle (novellyyours)
  • Priestess Luca’s Calming Chamomile Tea (@thesimplybookishco)
  • Group Character Cards (@dianadworak)
  • Signed/Numbered Print- Queen Katharine’s Royal Portrait (@alrooneyart)
  • Luke Gillespie Soap Bar (@littlebearries)
  • Bonus Content from Kendare Blake
  • Signed Five Dark Fates by Kendare Blake

I love the tapestry so much! The artwork is beautiful and I already have it hanging in my office! I also use the blanket everyday.

Least Favorite:

I wasn’t really a fan of the pin. I’m not one that collects them. I also only keep the ones I really like. This one just missed the mark for me.

Dreamy & Co: “The Queen Crowned” August Box

Hello Lovely Readers!

I am back with another unboxing and this time it is for Dreamy & Co. The one thing I love about their boxes is that it is only around $26 (US) to purchase which includes shipping. It is still packed with great goodies and of course, an enamel pin is included. That is like half of the box price right there!

I have purchased two others from them and will be getting October’s since it is Illuminae themed and I love that series so much. I think this is the first unboxing I have put on my blog though.

I will also have a paragraph at the bottom of this review to talk about my opinion overall for the series.

My Review:

I had high hopes for this one. Maybe it was because it’s the last book in the series or maybe it was that ending from book two. Regardless of what the cause was, I just had my expectations set too high.

For a book that is so long there wasn’t much substance to it. I found myself bored more times than I could count and was skimming bits here and there. It reminded me of the first book in a lot of ways and I am not sure how this got better in book two and three to slide back down to just being, “yeah, I guess it was alright.”

This was very much plot driven and the characters lacked because of it. The side characters were also the stars of the show and I wasn’t a fan of it. Don’t get me wrong, I do like good side characters and usually I do want more from them but for this particular book, I didn’t like the characters. I really wanted to see more from Mirabella and Katherine but unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Even the dead queens were kind of thrown to the side and when you thought you would see them in action it never happened and we only saw the aftermath of what they could do. I also wish Pietyr would have stayed down or died. He was unnecessary and was only used as a plot twist that didn’t really go anywhere.I just needed more from everyone!

Since the book was plot driven, I thought the plot twists would be interesting. Sure, there were some that I was surprised/emotionally effected by but overall they just kind of felt like too much. A few of the plot points from book three appear again but don’t even add anything to this plot really. They are there and then gone. No loose ends were ever tied. The ending, and pretty much the whole book, felt rushed and was disappointing to say the least.

Overall, I did really enjoy book two and three. I don’t know what happened when it came to book four but it had the potential to be great and it was just lackluster. This year has been one disappointment after another when it comes to book series and this one will be added to that list.

FlickerWix Candle Box: Crowns & Fates

Hello My Readers!

I have another unboxing for you today. This is the FlickerWix August Theme: Crowns & Fates. I really enjoyed this box and it was probably my favorite done by this company.

My favorite item was the artwork because it is done by my favorite artist. My least favorite was the coffee because although I do drink coffee, it’s not my favorite drink. Good thing my husband loves it!

The one sad thing about this one is that this shop is not going to be doing monthly boxes like this anymore. But! They will be curating special edition/quarterly boxes, so I’m not too upset. Anyways, let’s get into it!

Disney Book Tag

book tag.png

Hello, Fellow Book Lovers!

Today’s post is a book tag that was created by Kat @ Katytastic and if you click the link it will direct you to her youtube channel which is great!

I have seen this tag a couple of times and since I love all things Disney I decided why not!

The Little Mermaid- A character who is out of their element
The first one that came to mind is Arsinoe from the Three Dark Crowns series. I am not going to say why because *spoilers* but she really does fit into this category!

Cinderella- A character who goes through a major transformation
Bella Swan goes through a physical transformation and even though it may be physical it also changes how she has to live her life as well.

Snow White- A book with an eclectic cast of characters
Aurora Rising fits this so well since the squad is filled with diverse characters. Definitely a great group of people!

Sleeping Beauty- A book that put you to sleep
Three Dark Crowns was very slow and I am glad I listened to it instead. I am also glad I gave the rest of the series a shot because it did get better!

The Lion King- A character who had something traumatic happen to them in childhood
Asha from The Last Namsara.

Beauty and the Beast- A beast of a book that you were intimidated by but found the story to be beautiful
I can’t think of one for this!

Aladdin- A character who gets their wish granted, for better or worse
Katherine from Three Dark Crowns.

Mulan- A character who pretends to be someone or something they are not
Veronyka from Crown of Feathers.

Toy Story- A book with characters you wish would come to life
A Court of Thorns and Roses is definitely my top pick. I love them all!

Disney Descendants- Your fave villain or morally ambiguous character
AIDAN from The Illuminae Files. He is just awesome!

And that’s it! I really loved this tag. If you do it let me know so I can check out your answers.

One Dark Throne: Book Review

thegeekishbrunette review

29923707Title: One Dark Throne (Three Dark Crowns #2)
Author: Kendare Blake
Genre: YA Fantasy
Rating: 4 stars

->Click for Synopsis<-

This is the second book in the series and if you saw my review for the first you would know that I didn’t rate it very high and although I didn’t, I went ahead and read the next book. Let me tell you, it was so much better than the first!

When it came to the three queens, they are back and ready for a fight! The one thing that lacked in the first book was action. This one doesn’t hold back with it and made it much more enjoyable to read because of it. Katherine has grown into a much stronger version of herself and it was such a contrast from the first time we met her. It’s crazy how one certain event can change a feeble queen! Arsinoe is still my favorite queen and I loved seeing her grow and overcome the obstacles that were thrown in her path. I also appreciate the relationship between her and her sister Mirabella. They don’t let fate decide their lives for them.

The plot twists are crazy and kept me intrigued throughout. I am looking forward to starting the third book and seeing what happens, especially with Katherine and the predicament she has found herself in. I am also interested to see what is in store for the other two queens!

The writing has improved in this book and the characters are more developed. I found myself liking them more because of it.

Overall, the second book was much better than the first and I am glad that I kept going with this series because it really grew on me. I can’t wait to see what happens in the third book and don’t have too long to wait for the fourth. I mean September is kind of far away but its fine!

Three Dark Crowns: Book Review

On the island of Fennbirn, triples are always born and each are heirs to the crown. Each girl possesses a different magic: poisoner, naturalist, elementalist. Once the girls turn 16 they must each fight to death for the crown. Only one can stand.

I had heard pretty good things about this book and with the fourth one coming out this year I figured it was time to give it a read. Honestly, it wasn’t what I was expecting for multiple reasons and it lead to me not liking the book.

When it came to the characters, I didn’t connect with either of the sisters even though each one has their own point of view. They felt flat as there wasn’t much character development. The side characters were also not that interesting and were mainly focused with being in relationships.

The plot lacked when it came to any action. It felt like the plot was more focused on relationships than the sisters killing each other and it made it hard to get through. The pacing was also quite slow and made it hard to want to continue.

Overall, it was very hard to like anything about this book. I wanted to love it as the synopsis makes it sound amazing but it really lacked the excitement I was looking for. I will continue by reading the second book and hope that it gets better. Hopefully that one won’t be so disappointing!

Friday Favorites: Fictional Friendships

Friday Favorites

Hello, fellow book lovers!

Today’s post is a tag that was created by Something of the Book and she has a whole list of Friday Favorites to follow.

Today is about favorite fictional friendships. There are so many and I am glad I get a chance to share my favorites with you!

1.) Michael Scott & Dwight Schrute
Yes, I know this isn’t a book friendship but it is still fictional and I love them!

2.) The Illuminae Files Squad
This series was great because of the characters in it. They worked together and by the end of Obsidio they were best friends for life. I want to be a part of their squad!

3.) Arsinoe & Jules
These two are from the Three Dark Crowns series and they would do anything for each other. That is the type of friendship everyone needs.

4.) Harry, Ron, & Hermione
I have seen the movies but recently started reading through the series for the first time and I have found a new love for them.

5.) Lumiere & Cogsworth
I know, this is another movie one but Beauty and the Beast is life. These two banter all the time but deep down we know they love each other.

6.) The Inner Circle
It wouldn’t be a favorites list if I didn’t add this crew from Acotar. They bring something interesting to the group and they always have each others back.

And that’s it! Are any of these on your list? Let me know!
