“The trail of the garden banquet leads Maomao to the Garnet Palace! Aiming to uncover the identity and motives of the culprit who nearly succeeded in turning the festivities into a tragedy, the young apothecary-turned-lady’s maid temporarily takes up there at Jinshi’s behest. Home to Lady Aduo—the consort with the longest tenure in the Emperor’s affections—the Garnet palace harbors many intrigues, some more shocking than even Maomao could have imagined! Will solving the mystery at hand lose Maomao her job…and maybe even her life?!” (Goodreads)

These volumes really picked up! Minus the fifth where it kind of slogged for a bit.

We are finally learning more about Maomao and I am very surprised as to where her storyline has gone. It’s just crazy! Although there has been more information, there is still a lot more to go by and I am curious how it will play out.

The romance arc is finally coming, I can sense it. At least I hope I am right about this. I do love Jinshi and find him quite humorous with his slight affection towards her, or whatever you want to call it. He is such a great character and I love that he his protective over her.

I do wish there was more about consorts still but hopefully we will get back to them and life in the inner circle. Hopefully everyone is still getting along, ha.

Overall, these volumes were great! I feel like this one is going to be up there with Yona of the Dawn.

“When word of her accomplishments falls on the ears of His Imperial Majesty, Maomao finds herself tasked with a direct request from the throne. Turning down the emperor is out of the question for the former(?) apothecary if she wants to keep her head! But while acquiescing to the emperor is expected of all subjects, Maomao is about to discover that ladies-in-waiting have still more taxing duties to which to attend, as preparations of the garden banquet get underway! Concocting an aphrodisiac might be second nature to Maomao, but smiling prettily for the officials of the court could prove far more difficult…” (Goodreads)

I am happy to be back reading this series! It’s so cool to see apothecary and mystery be wrapped into one.

In a lot of ways Maomao reminds me of other characters I have read. She is smart and cunning, which are also probably her top qualities. I love seeing how her brain works and understanding the process of solving who is poisoning who.

There hasn’t been any romance between her and any of the other characters but I feel like it will be inevitable at some point. I could be wrong though.

I am still very curious about some of the characters and hope that they will get more page time later on.

Overall, this series is still going well and I can’t wait to continue on.

THE GREAT DETECTIVE OF THE INNER PALACE IS BORN…?!
Maomao, a young woman trained in the art of herbal medicine, is forced to work as a lowly servant in the inner palace. Though she yearns for life outside its perfumed halls, she isn’t long for a life of drudgery! Using her wits to break a “curse” afflicting the imperial heirs, Maomao attracts the attentions of the beautiful Jinshi and is promoted to attendant food taster. But Jinshi has other plans for the erstwhile apothecary, and soon Maomao is back to brewing potions and…solving mysteries?!” (Goodreads)

This was a great start to a series! It definitely has me intrigued.

The book follows Maomao who was sold to the inner palace and has been doing servant work since then. She has a background in apothecary and through some small miracles she moves up and is able to go back to work in apothecary once again.

I really liked her character and how over it she is when it comes to a certain character. I’m not sure what his motive is and I hope that it is something crazy, haha. Even if it isn’t big, I do like his character and hope his role continues throughout the volumes.

There is a lot of background information in the beginning but it wasn’t overbearing. I learned enough to understand how the inner palace works and what has been going on recently.

Overall, this was great and I can’t wait to continue!
