First Lines Friday (1/17/20)

Hello Lovely Readers!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

“War is not the story of generals, or even kings.
The sniper learned this long ago, that it is the smallest and most forgotten–by the ink headlines, by the march of history–who comprise its greatest ranks.”

I had the opportunity to read the first book in this series as an arc last year and now again with the sequel. These first two lines are super gripping! I can’t wait to start it this month.

“The Iron King stood before me, magnificent in his beauty, silver hair whipping about like an unruly waterfall. His long black coat billowed behind him, accenting the pale, angular face and translucent skin, the blue-green veins glowing beneath the surface.”

I read the first book I think in the fall? It was interesting but also weird? I gave it a 3 stars and am curious to see where the series goes so here we are! I am clearly not following my WWW Wed when it came to reading next.

“There’s a guy staring at me from the other end of the bar. I can only see him because I’m in the habit of leaning forward, elbows on the plastene surface, so I can see past the row of heads. From here I can keep an eye on the whole place by watching the bartender’s mirror overhead. And the guy I’m watching is using the same trick.”

I listened to the first book a week ago and am now waiting for this one to come in from the library! Although the first book lacked a bit for me. I am still curious to see where the plot goes.

It was a big, crazy, terrifying love, but we were too naive to know we should be scared.”

“The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night.”

“My parents would kill me if they caught me reading manga at one in the morning, but I was too keyed up to sleep. I hunched over my tablet, trying to lose myself in the world of Robo Mecha Dream Girl 5. Usually I couldn’t wait for the latest issue and devoured it in a matter of minutes, only going back later to take it all in and absorb everything I’d missed.”

“I was called Echo for my mother, who died when I was born, because when my father took me into his arms he said he felt the echo of her heartbeat within me.
My father didn’t blame me for my mother’s death, but he was often sad. He had me and my older brother Rodya to raise on his own. Two mouths to feed and no dark-haired laughing wife to come home to.”

I have already read the other books by this author and loved them. I shared a review for her first book this week. At around $8 off Amazon for this one, I couldn’t pass it up. Hopefully I will be able to pick up before the end of the year.
