Book Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Bookreview2

16096824Title: A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses #1)
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Genre: New Adult Fantasy (definitely not YA)
Publication Date: May 5th, 2015

synopsis header
“Feyre’s survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price …

Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre’s presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.” (Goodreads)

This is the second time I have read this one. It’s funny because I started them on the same date but two years apart.

I don’t have a review from the first time and I can tell you that if I did it would be completely different than the one I am about to write.

This will have spoilers for this book as well as some from the other books.

I’m just going to start this off by saying that I don’t hate Tamlin.

giphy.gif

Yes, I know it will come as a shock to many people but oh well! I said what I said. #sorrynotsorry

From the beginning we are introduced to Feyre. A young woman who doesn’t have a fear of anything. She shoots down a rather large wolf, talks calmly to a beast to protect her family, and doesn’t listen when people tell her to stay put.

In my first read I liked her. In this one, I still did for the most part. I did get tired of her forgetting how to breathe though. She kept sucking in breaths and holding them quite a lot!

Lucien will always be one of my favorite characters though. He goes through a lot of growth throughout the series. The banter between him and Feyre is always a joy to read about. I still think he was a bad friend for abandoning Tamlin. Tamlin literally took him in and maybe if Lucien would have been a better friend he could have prevented many of the bad decisions Tamlin decided to do. 🤷‍♀️

Rhysand, I didn’t like him in this. Not one bit. He kept mocking Tamlin. He called Feyre mortal trash. Sure, he has ulterior motives but it doesn’t make up for his actions. There is more I can complain about but I don’t want to damage the old image I have in my head of him.

Tamlin, my little cutie pie. Everyone is quick to judge him for everything that he does especially later on in the series. He clearly suffers from some sort of PTSD. Rhysand mentions something about his last lover in one of his mocking visits and yet what does he do? He steals away Feyre. I think the whole mate thing was a cop out. People also question why he didn’t help Feyre during the trials but Lucien and Rhysand did. I don’t know maybe because he was on a short leash with Amarantha. If the roles were reversed and Feyre didn’t help Tamlin would people still feel the same? Tamlin got shafted throughout the whole series. Many people will say they will do anything for their loved ones. Tamlin was doing the same thing but he is looked down upon for it. Feyre broke up with him in a freakin letter, but people now a days don’t want to be ghosted or broken up by text. Tamlin deserves better. No one can forgive him for his bad decisions but can forgive Feyre and Rhysand for theirs. Everyone looks past his bad past but pities Rhysand for his. It’s a double standard. There’s more I can say but then this will turn into a super long review.

I still skip past the sexy scenes because it’s too much for my prude self.

The growling from males was hilarious. It was also done quite a lot.

Will I be continuing on with my reread? No. I don’t want to tarnish the views I have of this series. I mean obviously it is already tarnished a bit. 🤷‍♀️🤣

Overall, it was good. I’m going to pretend this is the only book in the series because at least Tamlin gets a happy ending.

Hello, My Lovely Bookworms!

This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and is now hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words.

It consists of answering these three questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading:

I started This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab. It’s okay but I’m not really feeling it at the moment. Hopefully it picks up.

I am going to be starting The Sweeney Sisters by Lian Dolan. It’s for a blog tour I will be posting about on April 30th, 2020.

Recently Finished:

I recently finished A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Mass. It was a lot different than my first time, ha. I still adore Tamlin and feel like he was shafted. I will have a review up sometime.

I also finished Well Diary…I Have Tuberculosis: Researching a Teenager’s 1918 Sanatorium Experience by Shirley Morgan. It was a great non-fiction and now I haven’t finished my one for the month!

Reading Next:

I will be listening to Thick as Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner.

I will be reading A Conspiracy of Kings by Megan Whalen Turner. Both of these will finish this series until August!

Currently Reading:

I am going to be starting Bloodwitch by Susan Dennerd as my audiobook. I will then have finished my reread for this series! Looking forward to whenever the next book comes out.

I am reading The Silence of Bones by June Hur. It is for a blog tour I am a part of next week. I’m not very fair so I don’t have an opinion yet, lol.

Recently Finished:

I recently finished Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis and Body Language by Marylee Macdonald.

I loved Prince Caspian! It was just so good. I have been enjoying rereading this series.

Reading Next:

I will be listening to A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas next. It’s time to start that reread.

I will be reading The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner. It’s been average series but I’m still curious enough to continue.

Friday Favorites: Books that Make You Thankful to be a Reader

Fridayfavorites2

Hello Fellow Bookworms!

Today’s post is a tag that was created by Something of the Book and she has a whole list of Friday Favorites to follow. They are awesome and it is a fun way to find new books with a twist and see how others have answered it!

Here is another hard prompt…

It’s like being asked what inspires me. I’m not sure what books make me thankful to be a reader.

Well, let’s wing it like usual!

border2

1.) A Court of Thorns and Roses

I am thankful for this book series because it is what got me back into reading as an adult. It’s also thanks to my sister who told me about it!

2.) Chronicles of Narnia

I am thankful for this series because as a kid it got me into Fantasy.

3.) New Genres

This isn’t a book title(s) but because of trying new genres it has always managed to keep me out of reading slumps. Changing up is amazing! So, I am thankful for that.

Friday Favorites: Favorite Character Team Ups

Fridayfavorites2

Hello Fellow Bookworms!

Today’s post is a tag that was created by Something of the Book and she has a whole list of Friday Favorites to follow. They are awesome and it is a fun way to find new books with a twist and see how others have answered it!

I’m not really sure what this prompt really entails but I’m going to go with putting my favorite characters from different books/movies together! Let’s just get into it.

border2

1.) Velma and Sherlock (Scooby-Doo & Sherlock)

I feel like these two would be perfect to team up! Although I have a feeling that Velma would probably get annoyed by him once or twice, ha.

giphy.gif

2.) Tamlin and Gaston (Acotar & Beauty and the Beast)

I feel like these two are one in the same. They would do anything to get their “girl” even if it doesn’t end out well. They should support one another.

giphy.gif

3.) Kady Grant and Ryn (Illuminae & The Bone Houses)

Since both of them deal with a form of weird zombie/cannibal people, I think they would make the perfect team! Yay for girl power!

giphy.gif

4.) Aurora and Mirabella (Roar & Three Dark Crowns)

Since they both deal with a form of elemental magic, I believe they could be good friends. They could also do a lot of damage with their magic!

7ebf691315a840e9f3feaa7242256f66.gif

5.) Rhysand and The Darkling (Acotar & Grishaverse)

Now, I do not like The Darkling but I do think that he could learn a lot from Rhysand. I think they would make a great team! Maybe if The Darkling would have had a mentor like him then he could have been different.

Friday Favorites: Favorite Characters that Other People Hate

friday favorites

Hello, fellow bookworms!

Today’s post is a tag that was created by Something of the Book and she has a whole list of Friday Favorites to follow. They are awesome and it is a fun way to find new books with a twist and see how others have answered it!

This prompt was literally made for me. I am so excited for this and you have no idea how happy I became when I read what it was!

So, let’s just move right into it before I explode.

giphy.gif

grey line

1.) Tamlin (Acotar)

I don’t care what anyone says. I will always love him and refused to read the second book for a few days because I knew what was to come. I love him. I always will and he is just misunderstood. Fight me.

giphy.gif

2.) Gaston (Beauty and the Beast)

I never liked him at first but over the years I have grown quite fond of him. I don’t know why but I did. It’s probably because “No one’s slick as Gaston. No one’s quick as Gaston. No one’s neck’s as incredibly thick as Gaston’s. For there’s no man in town half as manly. Perfect, a pure paragon. You can ask any Tom, Dick, or Stanley. And they’ll tell you whose team they prefer to be on”. Yup, I went there.

giphy.gif

3.) Mal (Shadow and Bone)

I couldn’t stand The Darkling. I could appreciate Mal and his cuteness and just being the absolute best. I may not have liked this series overall but I am curious to see how his role will play out in the show coming to Netflix. I hope they don’t change him and his wonderful ways.

Clearly, there isn’t many characters where I differentiate in opinion. I know a lot of people hate these characters and that’s okay. More for me, am I right?

Friday Favorites: Favorite Unfinished Series

friday favorites

Hello, fellow bookworms!

Today’s post is a tag that was created by Something of the Book and she has a whole list of Friday Favorites to follow. They are awesome and it is a fun way to find new books with a twist and see how others have answered it!

The topic today really fits with the Top Ten Tuesday from this week. I have put off finishing a lot of series that I have enjoyed and there are also series that aren’t finished but I need more of! (Hurry up next book!) So, let’s just dive right in.

grey line

1.) Ember in the Ashes
2.) A Court of Thorns and Roses
3.) Truthwitch

These three all are uncompleted series that I need the next book for but who knows when that will be!

4.) Truly Devious
5.) Dark of the West
6.) Spectacle

Here are a few more that are unfinished series but will have another book coming out early next year. I will be in the same predicament as now if it isn’t the last book though…

7.) The Winner’s Trilogy
8.) The Traitor’s Circle
9.) Harry Potter

These are completed series that I am still working on. Yes, I know. I am late to the party. The other books on my tbr keep distracting me! I will hopefully finish them next year but I for sure know that they all won’t get completed this year, haha.

10-Infinity.) Every series I have started and not finished

If you are curious as to what other series I have not finished then you check out a post I wrote about it here.

grey line

Clearly, I am the worst. I really need to get it together but there are just so many books and I am only one person! Hopefully one day I will get caught up.

What’s a series you still need to finish or hope that it gets finished soon so you can get to the next book? Let me know in the comments!

Top Ten Tuesday: Book Characters I’d Love to Be Besties With

top ten

Hello, Lovely Bookworms!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018.

This is a great prompt and there are a lot of characters I could name! Hopefully I will be able to dwindle it down to ten because as I am writing this I have ideas swirling in my head.

1.) The Mad Hatter (Alice in Wonderland)

It would be fun to escape to Wonderland and have some delicious tea with this fine fellow. I know we would have a grand conversation about odd and peculiar things along with celebrating our unbirthday!

2.) Mr. Tumnus (Chronicles of Narnia)

Who wouldn’t to go through a magical wardrobe and get to see the beauty of Narnia. I would have grand adventures with him. When it’s getting dark, we would head back to his house for some delicious tea. (Clearly tea is on the brain for me)

3.) Nesta Archeron (A Court of Thorns and Roses)

Why Nesta? Well, she reminds me of a cat. She is quite temperemental and so am I at times. I feel like she does needs a good bestie and I am here to be that! She could also teach me to be strong. I am here for it!

4.) Donatella (Caraval)

I personally liked her more than her sister. I think we could be great friends. You know, talk about Legend and Jacks. Ask her if it’s okay if I like Jacks. Girl code, am I right? (haha)

5.) Kady Grant (The Illuminae Files)

She kicks butt, isn’t afraid, and saves space. I need to be more like her. She could definitely teach me a thing or two. Plus, I love her hair.

6.) Elrond (Lord of the Rings)

Oh, Elrond. I’ve always wanted to go to Rivendell and I feel like he may have some good gossip about the other elves.

7.) Bilbo Baggins (The Hobbit)

This one is a no brainer. He likes to eat and go on adventures! That would be the start to a perfect friendship.

8.) Raven (Vampire Kisses)

I enjoyed reading this series as a teen and wanted to be her. Even though I am older, I still would want to be her best friend and see where life has taken her.

9.) Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter)

I am sure she has some great stories about interesting creatures. We can bond over being Ravenclaws and just have a splendid time!

10.) Vasya (The Bear and the Nightingale)

I loved this series and how she never lets others tell her who she should be. I loved that about her. I would clearly be the shy one but I know she would have my back.

There is my list! Would you want any of these as your bestie? Let me know in the comments.

Friday Favorites: Fictional Worlds

Book Tag

Hello, fellow book lovers!

Today’s post is a tag that was created by Something of the Book and she has a whole list of Friday Favorites to follow.

Fictional worlds are something that I love. I enjoy being able to escape to a different world each time I pick up a new book. I get to immerse myself in a new culture and learn what it is like to live in such a place. It is awesome and makes me want to pack my bags! But alas, it doesn’t work that way sadly.

Anyways, here is my list of favorite fictional worlds:

1.) Prythian (A Court of Thorns and Roses)

2.) Middle-Earth (Lord of the Rings)

3.) Narnia (Chronicles of Narnia)

4.) Azeroth (World of Warcraft)

5.) Achleva (Bloodleaf)

6.) The Witchlands (Truthwitch series)

And there you have it! My wonderful list of amazing fictional worlds. Yes, I through in a videogame world but there are books about it and it is still fictional, ha.

Do any of these make your list? Let me know!
